Add a new smart lock to an existing door

Here’s a step-by-step guide to ensure compatibility, proper installation, and security:

Step 1: Choose the Right Smart Lock
  • Check compatibility with your existing deadbolt or door type (timber, metal, glass).

  • Decide on features:

    • Wi-Fi/Bluetooth control

    • Fingerprint, keypad, or app access

    • Integration with Apple HomeKit, Google Home, or Alexa

  • Popular options:

    • August Smart Lock Pro

    • Yale Assure Lock SL

    • Lockly Secure Pro

    • Samsung SHP-DP609

Step 2: Prepare Your Existing Door
  • Measure the borehole and backset (standard is 54mm hole, 60–70mm backset).

  • Check door thickness (most locks support 35–55mm).

  • Ensure the door alignment and latch mechanism are smooth.

Step 3: Remove Old Hardware
  • Unscrew and remove the old deadbolt or knob/lever.

  • Keep the strike plate if it’s compatible; otherwise, replace it.

Step 4: Install the Smart Lock
  • Follow the manufacturer’s instructions:

    • Insert the new latch/deadbolt mechanism

    • Mount the interior and exterior units

    • Attach batteries and/or plug in power

  • Secure all screws firmly without overtightening

Step 5: Set Up & Connect
  • Download the lock’s app (e.g., Yale Access, August App)

  • Follow setup steps:

    • Connect via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth

    • Add fingerprints, passcodes, or users

    • Enable smart home integrations if needed

Optional:
  • Install a door sensor for auto-locking features

  • Use a Wi-Fi bridge if remote access is needed and the lock only supports Bluetooth
